Artificial Intelligence

At a glance

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is software that simulates intelligent behavior. This includes, for example, that the software can make decisions and solve problems in a relatively independent way. Machine learning ensures that the software can continue to learn from new information in order to independently improve its procedures and decision criteria.

AIoT: Artificial Intelligence in the IoT

The combination of the Internet of Things and Artificial Intelligence makes the networked devices really useful. This combination is also called "AIoT" - Artificial Intelligence of Things. The infrastructure provided by the Internet of Things with sensors, data and devices is combined with the advantages of AI. This helps to make applications even more efficient.

More efficient solution finding based on human models
The term Cognitive Computing encompasses technologies that use AI to simulate human patterns of thought and behavior and support people in their work. Within the framework of IoT applications, solutions from Cognitive Computing can contribute, for example, to learning from processes and to continuously improving them. The special thing about Cognitive Computing is that, as a rule, no defined goal is specified. Instead, the system should learn independently and decide for itself how a process can be optimized - similar to what people would do if they were faced with a problem.

Manage and analyze data more efficiently
KI and Cognitive Computing are also used in conjunction with Big Data to process large amounts of data efficiently and sensibly. Networked devices usually collect a great deal of data that they need for internal communication. KI can get more out of this data and, for example, produce comprehensive, targeted analyses from which new insights can be gained to optimize the process under investigation.

Improved Machine-to-Machine (M2M) Communication
Continuously learning systems can also improve communication between machines, e.g. by optimizing which devices receive which information when.

Improved interfaces between IoT and humans
Machine learning is also used to prepare information better for the human eye - and thus to create an improved interface between man and machine. The processed information can help, for example, to make decisions more easily. At the same time, there is the option of these systems learning continuously through human interaction in order to become more independent over time and to make better decisions.

Advantages of AI in the Internet of Things

The combination of artificial intelligence and the Internet of Things brings many benefits, including

  • Optimization of production
  • Finding solutions in research and development
  • Identifying anomalies that are difficult to detect
  • Improvement of reliability, efficiency and productivity
